It was designated as Korea's eighth national park in 1971 as one of the five famous mountains in Honam and one of the eight scenic spots representing Korea. The area is 80.708 square kilometers. Naejangsan Mountain, whose main peak is Sinseonbong Peak (763m), has been called the "Geumgang River in Honam" since ancient times because the peaks are about 700m high, and the top of the peaks are made of unique strange rocks.
Naejangsan Mountain was originally called Yeongunsan Mountain after Yeongeunsa Temple, but now it was called Naejangsan(內藏山) because it was said that hidden things in the mountain were endless.
