Ximending Info:
The "Harajuku" of Taipei, this pedestrian shopping haven is one of the city's cultural centres, hosting a massive variety of fashion clothing shops, eclectic restaurants, clubs, and bars.
Located just west of Taipei Main Station in the historic Wanhua District, Ximending was founded during the Japanese colonisation era as a recreation district, and today has grown into a cultural icon with inspiration drawn from its Japanese roots.
One of the most popular destinations for tourists, the Ximending Pedestrian Area is the centre of the district, and accessible from Exit 6 of Ximen Station. The area is very popular with tourists and Taipei youth, and, along with shopping and restaurants, also hosts street performances and exhibitions.
The words Ximen (西門) stand for West gate, as the district is located by the historic western gate of the old Taipei City.
The historic Red House Theater is the main LGBT district in Taipei, with the outdoor area surrounding the theatre home to a large array of bars, shops, and meeting places. The area's bars have a reputation for serving excellent drinks and welcome all patrons.
Popular restaurants in the area include Modern Toilet and Ay Chung Rice Noodles (阿宗麵線).
There are many hair salons in this area offering the famous Taiwanese-style head wash and massage services.
The names Ximen and Ximending both refer to the same location, as the final 町 dīng is a Japanese character referring to the word district, while Ximen means west gate.
Taipei also has an "east gate", Dongmen (東門), home to Yongkang Street (永康街) and an "east district", Dong Qu (東區).
On older signage and materials, Ximending may be spelled as Hsimenting. #Ximending

Xinyi District is the seat of the Taipei City Government and Taipei City Council. The district includes Taipei 101, Taipei International Convention Center, Taipei World Trade Center, National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and various shopping malls and entertainment venues, making it the most cosmopolitan district of Taipei. Xinyi District is also considered the financial district of Taipei.
The district is a prime shopping area in Taipei, anchored by a number of department stores and malls. In addition, numerous high-end restaurants are located in the area. Thus, it is often called the Manhattan of Taipei.
During Japanese rule (1895-1945), Matsuyama Village (Japanese: 松山庄) covered modern day Xinyi and Songshan districts. The village was named after Matsuyama City in Japan and formed part of Shichisei District, Taihoku Prefecture. Matsuyama Village was incorporated into Taihoku City (modern-day Taipei) in 1938. It was renamed Songshan District in 1945.
In 1990, Songshan District was split in two as part of a citywide reorganization. The southern half became Xinyi District while the northern half retained its name. The present border of Xinyi runs along Civic Boulevard. Xinyi is separated from the Nangang District on the east by Fude St.; from Wenshan District in the south by Baozijiang and Poneikeng (坡內坑) Mountains; and from Daan District in the west by the Zhuangjing Tunnel (莊敬隧道), Keelung Road and Guangfu Road.[1] Development of the area in the 1990s transformed Xinyi into a modern shopping district which by 2010 boasted the highest property values in Taiwan. #Taipei

Street Food in Taiwan - TAIPEI'S #1 FRIED CHICKEN at Hot Star + TAIWANESE STREET FOOD in Ximending!
We are in Taipei to take you on a LATE NIGHT food tour in one of the most popular destinations in the city: XIMENDING! Ximending is a hot-spot for fashion, shopping, entertainment and street food! Today, we will be showing you some of the delicious hidden gems within the shopping street!!!
We start the night at the most famous yet authentic Taiwanese stalls in the area called Ay Chung Rice Flour Noodles. Their specialty is a think bowl of rice flour noodles. The broth is thick with a strong bonito flavour, the noodles are silky, the intestines are chewy. It is topped with cilantro and you serve yourself chili, garlic and vinegar sauces. We ordered a large bowl which came to 70 NTD (USD $2.33).
Next up is Taiwanese fried chicken! Forget KFC, Hot Star chicken is where the locals go. Their specialty is “ji pie” which translates to chicken steak. The steak is MASSIVE, super crispy and topped with their secret spices. The juice to crunch ratio is perfected. You can choose how spicy you would like the fried chicken, and we paid 75 NTD for the large piece (USD $2.49).
To wash down the street food, we went to a famous tea shop right beside Hot Star - Xing Fu Tang. Their bubble milk teas are almost luxurious. Right now, they are serving a brown sugar “dalgona coffee” bubble milk tea that we wanted to try. The tapioca pearls are cooked with brown sugar and the Dalgona foam is made with instant coffee. Although there are better bubble milk teas around, the presentation of the tea was stunning! The tea cost 95 NTD (USD $3.16).
There is a traditional stall deep within Ximen that serves a delicious oyster omelette (as well as many typical Taiwanese dishes). The shop is called Tian Tian Li. We got to watch the chef make the omelette from scratch. He made it crispy on the outside and goopy on the inside. It is always served with a sweet sauce. The oyster omelette cost 65 NTD (USD $2.16).
To end our huge night of eating, we visit an old school juice shop, Chengdu Star Fruit Juice, that’s been around since 1966. Their specialty is star fruit juice. Star fruit is slightly salty and sour and the juice is very refreshing. The owner was very kind and gave us an extra treat: star fruit that has been pickled in rice wine. The wine eliminates the sourness and adds sweetness. She told us many foreigners cannot eat it but we really enjoyed it! The star fruit juice cost 25 NTD (USD $0.83).
