Beopjusa Temple, meaning where the Buddha's Dharma dwells, is located at the foot of Songnisan. It was founded in the 14th year of King Jinheung of Silla (553 AD) by Uisin Pagoda and rebuilt by King Seongdeok and King Hyegong, marking the beginning of the grand temple in scale. During the invasion of the Red Turbans of Goryeo, King Gongmin was fleeing to Andong but stopped by on his way back to the palace; King Taejo of Joseon performed a hundred-day prayer before ascending the throne; and King Sejo, who was ill, prayed for three days at Bokcheonam. By the mid-Joseon period, it had become a magnificent temple with over 60 buildings and more than 70 hermitages, but due to the Imjin War, almost all the temple buildings were burned down. In 1624, the second year of King Injo's reign, Monk Byeokmam rebuilt the temple, and after several subsequent renovations, it remains to this day.
