Ssanggyesa Temple was established in the 21st year of King Seongdeok of Silla, when Venerable Sambeop returned from studying abroad, bringing the relics of Hyeneng, the 6th founder of Chinese Buddhist Zen school, to enshrine and enshrine them. In the 2nd year of King Munseong (840), Jingam Seonsa Hyeso called it Okcheonsa Temple, but in the 2nd year of King Jeonggang, it was changed to Ssanggyesa Temple. Ssanggyesa Temple, which had burned during the Imjin War, was rebuilt by Monk Byeogam in the 10th year of King Injo (1632). Notable attractions include the cherry blossoms at Ssanggyesa Temple, the Ssanggyeseok Gate handwritten by the elegant Choi Chi-won, the grand pagoda stele of Zen Jingam, the natural elm tree in the northern Guksa Rock courtyard, and Bulil Waterfall flanking the valleys of Cheonghak and Baekhak Peaks to the northeast. Meanwhile, Ssanggyesa Temple has a deep connection with tea. In the 3rd year of King Heungdeok of Silla (828), Kim Dae-ryeom went as an envoy to the Tang dynasty and brought the first tea tree seeds, which he planted by royal order in the Ssanggyesa area south of Jirisan. A monument to the tea ceremony is erected before reaching the first gate, and there is also a monument commemorating the tea planting site in the village tea field.
