Manchester Museum, one of the largest university museums in the UK, is over one hundred and thirty years old.
The original neo-Gothic building was designed by renowned architect Alfred Waterhouse (1830–1905) and is home to around four and a half million objects from natural sciences and human cultures. It has always been a place for research and learning, and we are a critical part of the city’s research infrastructure today.
hello future is the name given to the £15 million capital project, which transformed the museum and completed in February 2023.
Although our building and objects are important, the hello future transformation was about so much more. We asked ourselves how we can care for people, their ideas, beliefs and relationships. We believe that museums have extraordinary power to build understanding and empathy between cultures, across generations and time.
Transforming a historic building with such a large collection and renewing our civic mission was a complex project. Over eighteen thousand objects had to be moved or protected from building work during construction and we recycled and reused as much material as we could. It was made possible thanks to our extraordinary team and a spirit of collective endeavour.
The galleries and facilities that you find across the museum have been co-curated and co-designed and displays include new and diverse perspectives.

Manchester Art Gallery is best known for its important, representative collection of work by nineteenth-century British artists, particularly the Pre-Raphaelites. This is a reflection of its history: the nucleus of the collection came from the Royal Manchester Institution which showed a preference for acquiring contemporary art that continued when it became the City Art Gallery in 1883. The Bradford collector, Charles Rutherston, presented his modern art collection to the Gallery in 1925 and significant contemporary works were acquired during both World Wars, resulting in one of the most important war art collections outside London. Since 1945, the holdings of eighteenth century British art have been strengthened with the purchase of paintings by, amongst others, Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and George Stubbs. In 1979, the European Old Masters collection was transformed by the Assheton Bennett bequest of almost a hundred paintings, mainly by seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish artists. Today the collection includes over 2,000 oil paintings, plus related studies and archival material, and there is a renewed focus on collecting contemporary art.

The Etihad Stadium is home to Manchester City Football Club - MCFC.
Etihad Stadium, also known as Eastlands, was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Following the games, the stadium was converted into a football stadium as to provide Manchester City with a modern replacement for Maine Road. The club moved into Etihad Stadium at the start of the 2003-04 season.
In 2008, Etihad Stadium hosted the UEFA Cup final between Zenit St Petersburg and Rangers FC (2-0). The stadium was initially called City of Manchester Stadium, but was renamed Etihad Stadium in 2011 following a 10-year sponsorship deal with Etihad Airways.
At around the same time, Manchester City started to conduct feasibility studies into expanding the stadium, first considering ambitious plans to raise the roof and add a complete third tier, but eventually settling on just adding additional tiers to the stands behind the goals.
In the summer of 2014, works started on expanding the South Stand with an additional tier, which boosted capacity with 6,000 seats. At the same time, the club announced plans to add a further 3 rows of seating pitchside, which brought total capacity to over 55,000 seats for the start of the 2015-16 season.
If there is sufficient demand, the club may add a third tier to the North Stand as well, which will raise capacity to an approximate 61,000 seats.
