Ueno Zoo opened in 1882 (Meiji 15) as a museum facility under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and is the first zoo in Japan. In 1886 (Meiji 19), it became under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Household Ministry, and in 1924 (Taisho 13), it was given to the city of Tokyo to commemorate the marriage of His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince (Emperor Showa).
During World War II, there was a sad event called the disposal of wild animals, but until now, Ueno Zoo has exhibited various animals gathered from all over the world as a "living museum".
